Artist Statement
I have been asked, "How does the artist translate a scene from nature into a painting?" There are probably as many explanations of this as there are landscape painters. It has been said that art is selection. Landscape painting is an exercise in selection.
Space, shape, scale, light, color, movement, perspective, etc. - the formal tools of painting - are used to build the visual statement and "place" the subject in its two-dimensional environment. Distilling the image and revealing its uniqueness so that the painting becomes the communicator between the viewer and nature are the results I work to acheive.
